The Ziggurat Building is a West Sacramento landmark, sitting on the Sacramento River directly across from
Old Sacramento. Designed by Sacramento architect Edwin Kado, its
historical reference would be the ancient Assyrian/Babylonian terraced pyramids or temples. Built in 1997, the Ziggurat has been criticized by urban planners because the self-contained design of the building discourages its residents from leaving to eat or shop at area shops. The building's original tenant was western headquarters for The Money Store and is now occupied by the State of California's
Department of General Services.
The project cost $60 million and was designed in accordance with
Feng Shui. At the time, it was one of the first new buildings within the US to use seismic dampers. Its ground floor footprint is 300' x 300' and rises to a height of 156 feet to its uppermost floor at 90' x120'.

2006-02-02 17:05:14 It is strange that the Money Store would chose a pyramid design for their headquarters, since most legitimate businesses try not to use the words "money" and "pyramid" in the same sentence. —
